Learn to Replace and Adjust Garage Door Springs

Learning how to replace and adjust garage door springs safely is as important as taking care of the whole garage. These springs may not be as big as the garage opener but they sure are just as essential in making the garage door work.

Found at the upper portion of the door opening, the springs comes in two types: namely the torsion springs that are mounted on a stationary metal shaft. This shaft is positioned above the door that parallels the top door frame. The other kind of spring is the side mounted springs. These are long and heavy type of springs that are mounted in each of the upper sides of the tracks. The side mounted springs is tensioned for easy lifting when the door is closed and performs the same function as the torsion springs when a pulley is used.

The proper way to replace and adjust garage door springs is to replace it as a set. Prolonged usage of your springs decreases its strength. That is why it is not advisable to use a new string and old string all together as it causes door imbalance. Once a piece of spring breaks off, replace not just the busted one but the remaining old ones too.

It is highly recommended that in order to efficiently repair and adjust garage door springs, it should be done by a professional serviceman or yet, if done by the homeowner himself, it must be with caution. Bear in mind that adjustment of torsion springs can be a dangerous procedure and should not be taken for granted.
